    Frequently Asked Questions

    1
    Why do patients choose the Clinic for Hematology in Essen?

    Doctors of the Essen hospital constantly do research in hematology. They solve the problems in hemostatic disorders, low blood coagulation, successfully treat leukemia and all types of anemia.

    A few years ago, Essen doctors switched to minimally invasive methods of treatment, which guarantees minimal surgical intervention with the most positive result.

    Why do patients choose STC Cancer Center in the Essen hospital?

    In addition to traditional methods of treating tumors (radiation and chemotherapy), Cancer Center in Essen uses modern effective methods, such as:

    • Oncological surgery;
    • Point irradiation of tumors;
    • Immune and palliative therapy.

    Essen University Hospital collaborates with one of the world’s leading cancer centers The West German Proton Therapy Centre Essen (WPE).

    The Essen bone marrow transplant clinic has the largest treatment experience in Europe and is one of the leading centers in the world. The radiation therapy clinic is responsible for irradiation of the whole body, which is carried out on its own 60Co device.

    STC Cancer Center range of services

    Radiotherapy

    Three linear accelerators with different energies are available for 3D-conformal and intensity-modulated radiation treatment (IMRT) with photons.

    Tomotherapy

    This device enables highly conformal radiation therapy of complex and extensive target volumes by means of an intensity-modulated fan beam that is moved helically around the patient. For example, this technique is excellently suited for the irradiation of circular or strongly curved target volumes, within which a healthy organ (brain, spinal cord, long bones, etc.) should be particularly protected (tumors of the scalp, spinal tumors, metastases, extremity sarcomas).

    Stereotactic radiation therapy

    At the radiation clinic, the BrainLAB system offers all possibilities for both radiosurgery (one-time stereotaxy) and fractionated stereotactic radiation on the brain.

    Mostly used for the treatment of brain metastases and benign tumors (e.g. pituitary adenomas). Small tumors outside the brain are regularly treated with stereotactic techniques. These include early-stage lung cancer, metastases, liver, and bile duct tumors.

    Treatment requires careful planning, often based on a combined PET / CT scan or special magnetic resonance imaging, and usually requires 3-10 sessions.

    Brachytherapy

    Brachytherapy is regularly used for tumors and esophageal carcinoma. For patients with intermediate or high-risk prostate cancer, HDR brachytherapy is carried out in close interdisciplinary cooperation with the Department of Urology (Prof. Dr. Hadaschik, Dr. Tschirdewahn, Dr. Panic) and is carried out as a supplement to percutaneous radiation therapy.

    Innovative equipment of the Essen University Hospital:

    • Positron emission tomography;
    • PET-CT;
    • A gamma camera system for radionuclide diagnostics;
    • Cyclotron;
    • Linear accelerator;
    • Digital modern angiographic device for cardiovascular research;
    • Navigation system for microsurgery;
    • X-ray equipment of different kinds;
