Clinics for the treatment of cardiological and cardiosurgical

Heart surgery is surgical treatment of congenital and acquired diseases of the heart and blood vessels.

According to the World Health Organization, heart disease is the № 1 cause of death in developed countries.

Most often, cardiac surgeons treat complications of heart disease and correct congenital defects. Over the past 10 years, the number of heart transplants has amounted to 4-5 thousand annually, according to the International Society ISHLT.

The main advantage of foreign clinics is the survival rate of patients after heart surgery (98.8%).

I was surprised because of the prices here! I did coronary stenting in this hospital and prices here are almost 20 times lower as in Germany! That's crazy, because the hospital was very modern and doctors have a lot of experience. I am very thankful that the medtour team recommended this hospital for me. I got picked up at the airport and transferred straight to my room in the hospital. I had always an English speaking nurse and my doctor could talk English fluently too! I wouldn't be able to organise my trip to Ukraine myself so fast, as medtour did it. Thank you a lot!

Frequently Asked Questions

1
What is heart surgery?

It is a surgical treatment of diseases of the cardiovascular system.

1
What does a heart surgeon do?

He performs operations on:

  • Heart;
  • Aorta;
  • Pulmonary vein.
1
What are the most common diseases in cardiovascular surgery?

Most often, patients come with the following diagnoses:

  • Aortic stenosis — stenotic aortic valve prevents blood from flowing from the left ventricle to the aorta. Possible causes: congenital pathology, a consequence of rheumatism or result of formation of massive calcium deposits on the valve;
  • Ischemic disease is the № 1 cause of high mortality in industrialized countries. Arteriosclerosis (vascular calcification) leads to narrowing of the coronary arteries. This causes oxygen deficiency (ischemia) and increases the risk of heart attack;
  • Myocardial infarction — occurs when blood does not flow to heart muscle through the coronary artery. The muscle shuts down due to a lack of oxygen supply and can no longer perform its function;
  • Arrhythmia — abnormal rhythm. The most famous cardiac arrhythmias include bradycardia (heartbeat too slow), tachycardia (heartbeat too fast), arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat), and atrial fibrillation.
1
What are the most common cardiovascular surgeries?

Most often, cardiac surgeons perform following operations on the heart:

  • Bypass surgery;
  • Coronary stenting.
1
What methods are used in heart surgery abroad?

For safe and smooth operations, foreign cardiovascular surgeons use robotic medical technology. An example of such an operation is surgical bypass using a Da Vinci robot. The robotic operation is performed endoscopically and does not require dissection of chest bones. Robot combines two operations into one, which reduces trauma and means that the patient recovers faster.
Doctors perform:

  • Correction and replacement of the mitral valve;
  • Correction of atrial septal defect and coronary artery bypass grafting.
1
Where to go for heart surgery?

Israel offers a wide range of surgeries: percutaneous valve replacement, bypass surgery, cardiac transplant, etc. Modern methods of treatment and innovative equipment of Israeli clinics attract foreign patients:

  • The Ichilov Center carries out over 2 thousand valve replacement annually;
  • Assuta Clinic is outstanding by its technologies: PortAccess procedure, Watchmen pacemaker, 3rd generation biostents, MIDCAB and OPCAB bypass.

Turkish clinics are certified by Joint International Commission JCI and differ in the cost of procedures. Prices are 2-3 times lower than in European clinics. Treatment methods and equipment comply with international protocols. In Turkish clinic Medical Park, 1 500 cardiovascular surgeries and 6 000 angiographies are performed annually.

1
What are the advantages of foreign cardiovascular surgery?

Patients choose overseas hospitals for the following reasons:

  • Hybrid operating rooms;
  • The use of robotic systems during the operation;
  • Compliance with international treatment protocols;
  • Certified medicines and safe radiopharmaceuticals, which are tested in hospital’s own laboratory;
  • Modern schemes for management of postoperative and rehabilitation periods.

Diagnostic and treatment methods in cardiovascular surgery abroad

For the diagnosis in overseas hospitals doctors use:

  • Stress Test — measures ability to respond to external stress (triggered by exercise or pharmacological stimulation);
  • Echocardiography or ultrasound cardiography is an examination with ultrasound;
  • Electrocardiography is a recording of the sum of the electrical activity of all fibers using an electrocardiograph;
  • Daily ECG — ECG recording for 24 hours using portable recording devices reveals circulatory disorders in the heart;
  • MRI and CT of heart — imaging methods for assessing the structure and volume of tissue damage;
  • Myocardial scintigraphy is a nuclear medical examination procedure. The doctor injects a small amount of radioactive medicine into a vein. It then accumulates in the cells of heart muscle in accordance with blood flow. It provides information about blood flow, vitality and function of cardiac muscle;
  • Coronary angiography — type of x-ray that shows the coronary arteries. This is done with a cardiac catheter.

Surgical treatment of blood vessels

For treatment of blood vessels in foreign hospitals, following modern methods are used:

  • Orbital atherectomy — a procedure used to treat calcified arteries and restore blood outflow;
  • Angioplasty — a special catheter is inserted into the vessel and a stent is installed, which keeps the lumen of the artery open;
  • Artery bypass grafting — during the procedure, the surgeon restores blood flow by bypassing the damaged area of the artery. This operation gives long-term results. Foreign clinics use the OPCAB method. Advantages of the method: reducing the risk of stroke and minimizing blood loss.

During the consultation, the doctor decides what is best for the patient: stent placement, bypass or atherectomy. Leave a request on the MedTour platform and the coordinating doctor will select a foreign clinic for you free of charge!

Valve replacement

Doctors in overseas clinics carry out a modern version of valve replacement — the minimally invasive TAVI operation. The advantages of the method:

  • There is no need to connect patient to heart-lung machine;
  • The procedure is gentle — a new valve is transported using a catheter. This means that there is no open access and postoperative complications are minimal.

In foreign clinics, doctors use only certified prostheses:

  • Medtronic-Melody;
  • Edwards-Sapien.

Atrial fibrillation ablation

Atrial fibrillation affects more than 6 million people in Europe, according to the Swiss Center. Foreign cardiac surgeons use the innovative MAZE method. In classic MAZE operation, the doctor makes incisions in the atrial area and thereby provokes scarring. Scar tissue is not conductive for impulses and fibrillation no longer occurs.

Installing a pacemaker

Overseas hospitals use not only simple single-chamber pacemakers and HIS pacemakers for implantation, but also the latest CRT systems. Resynchronization pacemaker (CRT) maintains required heart rate and restores physiological connection of the segments.
