The hospital was founded in 1969. Every year, 4 million patients are treated in the San Donato network.

The hospital is accredited by the Italian National Health Service (SSN) and operates with the assistance of the University of Milan. San Donato developed international programs for the treatment of congenital heart defects. The projects were implemented with the support of the association Bambini Cardiopatici nel Mondo, together doctors operated on about three thousand children from around the world.

Leading doctors of Italy in the field of cardiology and cardiac surgeons work in San Donato: Professor Lorenzo Menicanti – ex-president of the Association of Cardiac Surgeons of Italy, Professor Francesco Bedogni – Member of the Board of the Italian Society of Interventional Cardiology, Professor Carlo Pappone – one of the best arrhythmologists in the world.

Thanks to the experience and professionalism of the doctors of the clinic, the success rate of cardiac surgeries in it is 97%. This is one of the best results among European clinics.

Since 2019, the San Donato Polyclinic has been home to the National Institute for Obesity Treatment (INCO), a national reference center with a multidisciplinary approach to the diagnosis and treatment of obesity. Why do foreign patients choose the San Donato Clinic for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases?

    Clinic San Donato is one of the most famous centers for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases in Europe. For more than 50 years, congenital malformations, arrhythmias and other heart diseases have been treated here.

    Every year, doctors perform more than 2,000 cardiac surgeries in children and adults, as well as 6,000 non-surgical interventions using catheters. The Department of Arrhythmology and Electrophysiology admits annually about 1400 patients for ablation. This is one of the highest rates in the world.

    Extensive experience in the treatment of heart pathology made it possible to open a research center for the study of blood vessels and the heart on the basis of the clinic. It has been accredited by the Italian Ministry of Health as the Scientific Institute for Research, Hospitalization and Healthcare (IRCCS). Having a wealth of experience, the doctors of San Donato take on the most difficult cases, when there is nothing they can do to help at the place of residence of a foreign patient.

    Why do foreign patients choose San Donato for the treatment of diabetes and excess weight?

    Since 2010, the San Donato Clinic has housed the National Institute of Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery. Here, operations are performed on patients with type 2 diabetes and overweight. The priority of doctors is minimally invasive surgery, including laparoscopic and robotic surgeries.

    During the year, more than 1500 operations of varying degrees of complexity are performed:

    • Sleeve resection of the stomach;
    • Gastric bypass;
    • Banding of the stomach.

    Together with surgeons, a team of specialists takes part in the treatment of the patient: nutritionists, endocrinologists, clinical physiologists and psychiatrists. This approach contributes to achieving the best results in treatment and quick rehabilitation of patients.

    The Institute accepts patients who have already undergone treatment in other clinics, but did not achieve the desired results or received complications.

    Director of the Institute of Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery Alesandro Giovanelli has performed more than 8,000 revision and surgical bariatric surgeries. The doctor operates using minimally invasive techniques using a da Vinci robot or mini-laparoscopy. Alesandro Jonavelli is a member of the International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity and Metabolic Disorders (IFSO).

    Treatment of arrhythmia at the San Donato Clinic?

    Specialists of the Department of Arrhythmology and Electrophysiology of the San Donato Clinic treat all types of cardiac arrhythmias, such as:

    • atrioventricular block;
    • Brugada syndrome;
    • Ventricular and atrial tachycardia;
    • Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome and others;
    • Bradycardia, etc.

    Every year, more than 3,000 ablations and installations of artificial pacemakers are performed here using modern high-tech equipment. The department is equipped with 3 specialized laboratories for cardiac catheterization. Each laboratory is equipped with a computerized 3D navigation system and rotational angiography. This makes it possible to carry out several operations simultaneously without loss of quality and reduces the waiting time. For complex interventional interventions, the Stereotaxis Niobe II robotic navigation system is used. With its help, doctors can control the movement of the catheter under the control of a magnetic field. This helps to avoid complications and minimizes the error during the procedure.

    The Department of Arrhythmology and Electrophysiology is headed by Professor Carlo Pappone, one of the leading specialists in the treatment of arrhythmia. The doctor has performed more than 130,000 ablations and 100,000 implantations of pacemakers and defibrillators. Professor Pappone is one of the most cited specialists in leading medical journals for his internationally recognized “Papone Approach” for the asymptomatic treatment of Wolff-Parkinson-White Syndrome and Brugada Syndrome.
