Every year, 1,500 surgeries are performed on overweight patients here. Since 2010, the department has been awarded the title of National Institute of Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery (INCO).
This is the main medical institution in Italy for the treatment of obesity and related diseases. One of the main directions is performing reconstructive and revision interventions for patients with complications after surgery.
Minimally invasive operations
Surgical treatment of obesity in San Donato is carried out only with minimally invasive techniques. This means that the doctor will not cut into the abdomen to perform surgery. All procedures are carried out through several punctures with a diameter of 4 mm.
Minimally invasive operations are performed using laparoscopic equipment or on a Da Vinci robot.
During laparoscopy, the doctor inserts several surgical instruments into the abdominal cavity through small incisions. One of the tools is an optical camera that displays an image on a screen. Thus, the anatomical integrity of the abdominal wall is not violated.
Robot-assisted Da Vinci operations are the most modern direction in minimally invasive surgery. The doctor controls the “arms” of the robot while sitting at a special installation. The Da Vinci robot system tracks the surgeon’s actions and processes them using its own computer system. Thanks to this, the surgeon’s actions are performed more accurately and safely. Robotic surgery allows more complex operations to be performed in places that are inaccessible to the surgeon’s hands.
Benefits of minimally invasive surgery:
- Low risk of bleeding and infection after surgery, adhesive disease;
- Rapid rehabilitation;
- Ability to perform more complex surgical procedures;
Multidisciplinary Team
Treatment of obesity requires the participation of several specialists. At the National Institute for the Treatment of Obesity, a team of doctors works with each patient:
- Bariatric surgeons;
- Endocrinologists;
- Psychiatrists, psychologists and psychotherapists;
- Rehabilitation specialists;
- Nutritionists.
This approach allows you to develop a comprehensive therapy program, reduces the chances of complications and speeds up the recovery process.
In addition to doctors, the department employs case managers and patient managers. A case manager is a specially trained nurse who conducts training for patients diagnosed with obesity.
Patient managers accompany patients at all stages of treatment and diagnosis. This makes it easier for patients to stay in a foreign clinic.
