Atherosclerosis treatment
Atherosclerosis is a chronic vascular disease caused by plaques of cholesterol. Cholesterol plaques are deposits of fat and calcium on the walls of arterial blood vessels. Plaques make the walls of the vessels more rigid and thick, which leads to a narrowing of the inner opening of the vessel.
In the last stage of the disease, the opening of the vessel is so narrow that blood can no longer flow and blood circulation stops. If the disease affects the coronary vessels of the heart, the risk of myocardial infarction increases.
According to the WHO, atherosclerosis causes 17.5 million deaths annually.
