    Frequently Asked Questions

    1
    What are the most common specialties patients seek at Apollo Hospital?
    • Transplantology: liver, kidney, heart, and bone marrow transplantations;
    • Cardiac surgery;
    • Orthopedics;
    • Cancer treatment and proton therapy;
    • Robotic spine surgery;
    • Urology.
    1
    Why is proton therapy at Apollo better for children?

    Proton therapy allows for targeted treatment of only the cancerous cells. It is indicated for children with tumors in the brain, head, neck, spinal cord, heart, lungs, and other areas that are highly sensitive to radiation.

    While traditional radiation therapy can be effective, it often leads to long-term side effects in children, such as stunted bone and soft tissue growth in the treated area, hormonal imbalances, neurocognitive impairment, and a higher risk of secondary cancers later in life. Proton therapy significantly reduces these risks.

    What conditions are treated with the Da Vinci surgical system?

    Using the Da Vinci Surgical System, Apollo surgeons can offer a minimally invasive option for complex surgical procedures.

    • Urology: prostate, bladder, and kidney cancer.
    • Gynecology: multiple fibroids, uterine and cervical cancer, endometriosis, ovarian cysts.
    • Cardiology: atrial septal defects, valve replacement, coronary heart disease.
    • Gastroenterology: colon and rectal cancer, obesity, stomach cancer.
    1
    Is there an alternative to traditional coronary bypass surgery at Apollo?

    Patients with multiple blocked arteries are usually treated with a conventional bypass surgery, which involves opening the chest and requires a longer recovery time.

    Minimally invasive hybrid revascularization allows surgeons to perform surgery through a small incision in the chest between the ribs using a high-definition camera and monitor, without the need for a large incision.

    India’s first minimally invasive hybrid revascularization surgery was performed by Dr. M. M. Yusuf at Apollo Hospital, Chennai. In addition, the team of cardiac surgeons also performs robotic revascularization using the Da Vinci system.

    What is the Renaissance robotic system?

    The Renaissance robotic system is the only technology specifically designed for spine surgery, and Apollo Hospitals Group was the first in India to implement it.

    Since its launch, over 175 successful surgeries have been performed. The advantage of robotic spinal surgery is precision, the range of applications varies from complex spinal deformities such as scoliosis to minimally invasive lumbar surgeries.

    1
    Does Apollo perform minimally invasive joint replacement surgeries?

    Many patients who undergo standard knee replacement programs report long post-operative recovery, incomplete knee extension, and post-operative pain.

    Subvastus minimally invasive total knee replacement is a new technique successfully used at Apollo Hospitals. Unlike the traditional 15–20 cm incision that cuts through muscles and tendons, this method uses an 8–10 cm incision and preserves muscles.

    Additionally, new Attune implants used in this method offer enhanced mobility and faster recovery, with a functional lifespan of up to 30 years.

    Institute of Transplantology. Since India’s first liver transplant at Apollo in 1998, the program has performed 21,000 kidney and 5,600 liver transplants for both children and adults.
