Regular consumption of chicken increases the risk of early death from gastrointestinal cancer

News

A team of researchers from the National Institute of Gastroenterology in Italy has found a link between regular poultry consumption and early death from digestive cancer. In their study, published in the journal Nutrients, the team analyzed health data from 4,869 Italian adults over a 20-year period.

Previous studies have shown that eating poultry (mainly chicken) as a source of protein is healthier than red meat because it is less likely to contribute to cardiovascular disease and some gastrointestinal cancers. However, a recent study shows that regular consumption of chicken may contribute to the development of some gastrointestinal cancers and early death.

The data for this study was collected through surveys or was collected by health care providers who conducted health screenings. Each of the study participants also filled out questionnaires regarding their dietary habits. The health status of these individuals was assessed through medical records and regional databases, which allowed the team to include deaths in the study as well. One factor looked at was how often the subjects ate meat or poultry; another was the incidence of gastrointestinal cancer and deaths from it.

The researchers found a higher incidence of gastrointestinal cancers, as well as early deaths associated with these cancers, among people who ate more than 300 grams of poultry meat per week. The risk of death with this amount of poultry meat was 27% higher compared to people who ate just 100 grams of poultry meat per week or less.

The research team recognizes that more research is needed to understand the findings. For example, they were unable to determine whether the increased mortality from eating poultry meat was related directly to its consumption or to how it was prepared, such as whether it was fried, breaded, or whether certain seasonings were added. In addition, while the study did take into account some health and lifestyle indicators, one potentially serious one – physical activity, particularly the amount and types of exercise – was not measured.
