Nurabot is an innovative robotic nurse developed by Foxconn, NVIDIA, and Kawasaki Heavy Industries. The creation of the invention began in July 2024 in collaboration with the Taichung Veterans General Hospital in Taiwan. The first public presentation of Nurabot was held in March 2025 at the NVIDIA GTC conference in the United States. The robot is designed to ease the burden on medical staff, especially in the face of a global nursing shortage that WHO predicts could reach 4.5 million by 2030.
Nurabot is a collaborative robot that already performs routine and physically demanding tasks, allowing medical staff to focus on more complex aspects of patient care. The main functions of the invention include delivering medicines and samples around the hospital, monitoring patients’ vital signs using sensors in the wards, navigating and escorting visitors to the right departments, and interacting with patients through a screen with an animated face that can display emotions.
According to doctors, Nurabot can reduce the workload of nurses by 30%, especially during night shifts and peak hours. In the future, the robot’s functionality will be expanded to include support for multiple languages to communicate with patients of different nationalities, facial recognition to identify patients and staff, and assistance in transporting patients who need physical support.
When creating Nurabot, the team of scientists faced several challenges. First, it was necessary to ensure the robot’s safe movement in narrow corridors and with a large number of people. Second, they had to ensure successful integration with various medical systems, electronic records, and equipment. Finally, it was important to ensure that patients’ personal data was protected during the collection and processing of information.
Nurabot uses four advanced technologies to ensure efficient operation. NVIDIA Jetson Orin is a powerful computing platform for real-time information processing. Holoscan is a platform for processing sensor data that ensures accuracy and speed of response. FoxBrain LLM is a large language model that allows a robot to understand and generate natural language to communicate with patients and staff. Isaac for Healthcare is a virtual training and simulation environment that allows the robot to adapt to different scenarios in a hospital.
