A scientific breakthrough in contraception: an international group of researchers from the US and the UK has announced the creation of the world’s first male contraceptive pill, provisionally named “YCT-529”. The drug, which has successfully passed clinical trials, blocks sperm production while maintaining natural testosterone levels and without affecting libido or emotional state.
In preclinical studies on male mice, the drug prevented conception in 99% of cases after just four weeks of use. In male monkeys, a significant decrease in sperm count was observed after just two weeks.
The main advantages of this innovative drug are:
According to the creators, 75% of men worldwide are willing to take responsibility for contraception. YCT-529 may be the answer to this demand, offering a safe alternative to traditional family planning methods. The drug is expected to hit the market within a few years after completing all the necessary registration procedures.
“This is a real revolution in gender relations,” experts say. “Men will have the opportunity to control reproductive issues on an equal footing with women.”
The development may be particularly relevant for couples where traditional methods of contraception are contraindicated for women for medical reasons. Pharmaceutical companies are already predicting that YCT-529 has every chance of becoming one of the best-selling drugs in history, given its potential audience of billions of men of reproductive age.
The developers emphasize that a safe and effective contraceptive pill for men will give couples more options in choosing contraception, allow for a more equitable sharing of responsibility for family planning, and provide men with reproductive autonomy.
The final cost of the pills has not yet been announced, but the developers promise to make them affordable to the general public.
