At Galeazzi, doctors perform neurosurgical treatment for conditions such as:
- Benign and malignant brain tumors,
- Extrapyramidal disorders, including Parkinson’s disease,
- Neuralgia of the trigeminal nerve,
- Normotensive and obstructive hydrocephalus,
- Degenerative disorders of the spine – herniated discs and stenosis of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine,
- Turret’s syndrome,
- Obsessive-compulsive disorder.
Surgery for Behavioral and Movement Disorders
The Center for Extrapyramidal Disorders and Tourette Syndrome is the only center in Italy that performs surgical treatment of the most severe cases of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.
Here, for the first time, an intraoperative CT scanner was used to perform Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) and spine surgery. DBS is an operation during which a surgeon implants a special device that sends signals to specific parts of the brain.
Using deep brain stimulation, Dr. Galeazzi treats Tourette’s syndrome, obsessive-compulsive disorder, chronic pain syndrome, Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders.
Tumor Treatment
Malignant and benign tumors at Galeazzi are operated on using advanced methods:
- microsurgery,
- endoscopic neurosurgery,
- neuronavigation,
- stereotactic surgery.
High-tech equipment helps doctors to successfully remove tumors, which are located near the vital centers of the brain or in difficult to access places.
Galeazzi specialists use an intraoperative fluorescence microscope to identify small tumors, allowing them to operate more efficiently and improve treatment prognosis.
Surgery for hydrocephalus is performed using neuroendoscopy. The treatment of hydrocephalus uses programmable valves that drain excess fluid and help prevent too much pressure in the brain.
