Galeazzi Orthopedic Institute: Department of Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology

The main profile of the department is the imaging of the musculoskeletal system – from bones and soft tissues to ligaments and tendons. Under the supervision of ultrasound and MRI, specialists diagnose and treat all major orthopedic diseases. It is also possible to have abdominal cavity and thyroid gland diagnostics, bone density evaluation, etc.

More than 150,000 examinations are performed each year in the department, 95% of which cover the orthopaedic spectrum.

The Department is equipped with several 1.5T MRI scanners, CT scanners, ultrasound scanners and a densitometer.

Magnetic Resonance Arthrography (MRA)

In order to make an accurate assessment of pathological changes in a joint, doctors perform a targeted MRI scan of the joint area. In the first stage, under ultrasound guidance, the patient is injected with a contrast agent inside the joint to be examined. This allows for a better examination of all structures – ligamentous apparatus, joint capsule, etc. Then, the joint is scanned with an MRI scan.

Usually, this procedure is performed before surgery to assess the relative position of tissues and intra-articular structures. Each year, the department performs more than 200 MRAs.

EOS digital radiography system

With the new digital radiography technology, doctors obtain high-resolution images with 3D reconstruction capabilities. Thanks to special sensors, the radiation dose is reduced by up to 5-7 times compared to conventional radiography.

EOS-radiography scans the whole body or its separate parts in just 25 seconds and calculates over 100 different parameters necessary for making a diagnosis and prescribing treatment. The examination is performed for routine diagnostics as well as before surgeries.

Minimally Invasive Treatment

The center’s modern equipment allows not only detailed diagnostics, but also minimally invasive treatment. Our specialists treat spine and joints under ultrasound and CT scanning. Usually, the patient is under local anesthesia and can return to normal life the next day.

Doctors in the department of interventional radiology perform the following procedures:

  • Soft tissue biopsy.
  • Treatment of plantar fasciitis, tendinopathies.
  • Injection treatment of spinal pain,
  • Intra-articular injection of hyaluronic acid and glucocorticoids,
  • Bone biopsy,
  • Injections of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and other growth factors, in collaboration with the REGAIN Institute.

All procedures are performed under real-time ultrasound or computed tomography monitoring, allowing physicians to perform complex manipulations with minimal damage to healthy tissue.
