    Frequently Asked Questions

Why do patients choose treatment in the Galeazzi hospital
    • Since the foundation of the institute, doctors have published more than 1000 scientific articles: these are decades of scientific research in orthopedics.
    • Annually the Institute treats a quarter of a million patients, 75% of them visited the hospital after poor-quality treatment in other centers. Therefore, orthopedists of Galeazzi have unique experience in the treatment of complex and rare diseases.
    • 5 thousand orthopedic operations a year is a record indicator of the popularity of a narrow-profile center.

The innovative equipment in the Galeazzi Institute

The department of spinal surgery uses three-dimensional fluoroscopy — a technique that during complex surgeries on the spine in real time is tracking all the actions of the surgeon in 3D. Also, neurosurgeons use intraoperative neuromonitoring (Somatosensory Evoked Potentials (SSEPs), Electromyography, etc.) to visualize the functional state of the spine and brain.

Specialists in the Galeazzi hospital use the EOS system — a modernized digital radiograph, to receive images of the spine without distortion, but with the possibility of three-dimensional reconstruction of images. At the same time, the radiation exposure for the patient is significantly lower in comparison with the classical X-ray examination.

Intraoperative computed tomography and Intraoperative Fluorescence Microscope are used when performing deep brain stimulation in patients with Parkinson’s disease, as well as in a number of other surgeries requiring high precision in the actions.

    Joint replacement

The priority area of the clinic is arthroplasty of various complexities. Specialists of the Galeazzi Institute perform prosthetics of the knee (800 surgeries per year), hip (350 surgeries), shoulder, and ankle joints. Doctors are focused on minimizing damage to healthy tissues during surgery, with the most complete preservation of periarticular tissues. This promotes early rehabilitation. For example, surgeons perform arthroplasty of the knee joint under local anesthesia, while maintaining the patient’s motor activity on the same day and discharging from the hospital the next day after surgery.

In the Department of the Hand Surgery, doctors practice prosthetics of the scaphoid bone of the wrist and metacarpal bone for degenerative diseases of the joints and traumatic injuries.

Can the spine and joints be treated non-surgically

Doctors of the Galeazzi hospital have a unique approach to the choice of treatment tactics. First, they focus on a thorough diagnosis and perform the surgery only if conservative methods of treatment have not shown their effectiveness.
