  • Increased encephalopathy (confusion caused by liver failure).

Donation from a living person

A part of the liver is taken from a close relative of the patient and transplanted to the patient himself. At the same time, the relative does not have any deterioration in health – everything is reliable and safe. Possibility of liver transplantation from a relative:

    Frequently Asked Questions

    1
    How does the German Clinic Essen choose a liver donor?
    • Throughout the history of the clinic, over 1500 people have donated liver.
    • Up to 12 relatives are examined in one patient with liver disease.

    This is how German doctors understand whether these relatives are suitable as donors. When potential donors are found to have serious and previously unknown diseases, especially of the cardiovascular system and genetic diseases, the necessary treatment is carried out.

    To date, the university hospital has performed 205 liver transplants following live donation. Among these operations, 44 transplants were performed for children.

    1
    How is a kidney transplant carried out at the German clinic Essen?

    Currently, about 20% of the kidneys to be transplanted are removed from living donors in Essen. For children, this option avoids prior dialysis.

    To date, 250 living kidney donations have been made in Essen. The following are used as access routes for kidney removal within the framework of living donations:

    • Open surgery;
    • Minimally invasive (laparoscopy).

    In each case, it is weighed which method is best for the donor.

    A special cross-transplant program is used here. At the same time, Essen doctors help patients who have only one donor with an unfavorable blood group.
