Treatment of oncological diseases with an antitumor autovaccine

The mechanism of action of immunotherapy is aimed at overcoming the immunological tolerance of the body to tumor antigens. Treatment helps to activate the body’s own defenses to fight the malignant process. After the introduction of the vaccine in patients, the activation of the immune response occurs in the full antigenic spectrum. This means that the drug affects not only active, but also inert cancer cells, thus preventing the likelihood of a recurrence of cancer.

Treatment of oncological diseases with an antitumor autovaccine

About the procedure

An antitumor autovaccine was developed by Ukrainian scientists from the R. E. Kavetsky Institute of Experimental Pathology, Oncology and Radiobiology. The drug is intended for personalized treatment of cancer. Vaccine therapy is prescribed after radical removal of a malignant neoplasm in order to prevent the development of recurrence and metastasis of the tumor, as well as to prolong and improve the quality of life of patients.

An anti-cancer autovaccine is made from the patient’s own tumor material after surgical removal of the neoplasm. To enhance the immune response, tumor proteins are biotransformed under the influence of the cytotoxic lectin B. subtilis B-7025.

What treatment is the cancer vaccine combined with?

The autovaccine is fully compatible with traditional cancer therapies such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Vaccine therapy improves the tolerability of standard cancer treatment, and also prevents the development of cytopenic conditions (deficiency of one or more types of blood cells), which often occur with chemotherapy and radiotherapy. The introduction of autovaccine immediately after surgery to remove a cancerous tumor contributes to an increase in the overall and recurrence-free survival of cancer patients by 2 times. Vaccine therapy is well tolerated by patients and is not accompanied by the development of complications.

What malignant tumors is it used for?

Autovaccine Cancerax active is intended for the treatment of tumor diseases of various origins after surgical removal of the neoplasm. According to the results of preclinical and clinical studies, the greatest effectiveness of vaccine therapy is observed in the treatment of:

  • Tumors of the gastrointestinal tract,
  • Breast cancer,
  • Oncological diseases of the genitourinary system,
  • Malignant diseases of the brain,
  • Soft tissue tumors.
Disease number of procedures per year % efficiency
Stomach cancer 5 (course) + revaccination once a month 70
Breast cancer 5 (course) + revaccination once a month 70
Bladder cancer 5 (course) + revaccination once a month 70
Prostate cancer 5 (course) + revaccination once a month 70
Uterine cancer 5 (course) + revaccination once a month 70
Soft tissue tumors 5 (course) + revaccination once a month 70
Lung cancer 5 (course) + revaccination once a month 70

About the procedure

How is the procedure carried out

How to use the vaccine

For vaccination, the vial with the vaccine is thawed and heated to body temperature immediately before administration, after which it is vigorously shaken. To reduce pain when injected into the vial, add 0.5 ml of 2% lidocaine (in the absence of individual intolerance to the drug in the patient). Before the injection, a test for an allergic reaction is required.

С каким лечением сочетают противораковую вакцину?

The vaccine is administered with an insulin syringe subcutaneously in the area of the shoulder blade. The rest of the drug is frozen and left for subsequent injections. An iodine mesh is applied to the injection site.

Vaccination schedule:

  • Day 1 – 1 injection;
  • Day 3 – 2 injections;
  • Day 10 – 3 injections;
  • Day 17 – 3 injections.

Revaccination begins 21-30 days after the end of the main course and is carried out monthly for 4 months according to the scheme:

  • Day 1 – 1 injection;
  • Day 3 – 2 injections.

During the vaccination period, it is advisable to take calcium supplements.

Contraindications

The vaccine is not used for therapy:

  • Melanomas;
  • Mesothelioma;
  • Oncohematological diseases.

The vaccine should not be used in combination with drugs that have a pronounced immunosuppressive effect (suppressing the function of the immune system).

    Risks and side effects

    Since the vaccine is made from the patient’s own tumor material, the treatment has no significant side effects.

    In some cases, vaccination may be accompanied by a slight rise in body temperature up to 37-38 °C (from 2 hours to a day). Of the positive effects, there is an improvement in appetite and a decrease in pain in the patient.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    When was the development of lectin antitumor vaccines first started in Ukraine?

    plus close

    The idea of development belongs to Dmitry Zatula, Doctor of Biological Sciences, Professor, Corresponding Member of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, an outstanding scientist in the field of oncology and microbiology.

    He first proposed this treatment technique back in the 1970s. Since then, the vaccine has been constantly improved. Numerous clinical studies were carried out until a variant was obtained that showed the greatest clinical efficacy. That is what is currently being used.

    What do you need to get a course of vaccine therapy?

    plus close

    Immunotherapy requires a sample of malignant tissue from which an individual vaccine will be made. Therefore, therapy is prescribed to patients after surgical removal of the tumor.

    Unlike dendritic cell vaccines, which require blood sampling from the patient and isolation of dendritic cells with each application, the autovaccine is made at one time for a year. Vials with the drug are stored in the refrigerator and used in accordance with the vaccination schedule.

    How effective is the vaccine?

    plus close

    The effectiveness of vaccine therapy depends on the stage of cancer and the type of tumor. The best results can be achieved in the treatment of cancer of the brain, breast, stomach, lungs and intestines at the l-ll stage.

    Can the cancer autovaccine be combined with other cancer treatments?

    plus close

    The vaccine was developed specifically for the combined treatment of oncological diseases. Its use can increase the effectiveness of chemotherapy and radiotherapy, as well as improve patient tolerance of standard cancer treatments.

    How to start treatment with a vaccine?

    plus close

    To start vaccine therapy with a Ukrainian-made drug, you just need to leave a request on the website. In the near future, a medical coordinator will contact you, who will tell you in detail about the stages and features of treatment.
