How is kidney cancer treated in Turkey

The tactics of treating a patient with kidney cancer are drawn up by the doctor depending on the location and stage of cancer, degree and size of tumor, age and general health of the patient.

  • Surgical intervention — nephrectomy (removal of the kidney)

The most common and preferred treatment. The surgeon may perform a nephrectomy through a single incision (open nephrectomy) or through several small incisions in abdomen (laparoscopic nephrectomy). Removal of the kidney can be complete or partial. Operation takes 30 to 120 minutes.

  • Radiation therapy

Tumor cells are destroyed by high energy radiation. Doctors use this technique to slow the progression of cancer and reduce pain.

  • Targeted therapy

It’s carried out with anticancer drugs directed against cancer cells. This slows down the progression of cancer and kills most of the tumor cells. This therapy is often used in combination with other cancer treatments.

  • Immunotherapy

The goal of immunological therapy is to fight cancer cells and destroy them by strengthening the patient’s immune system. The main groups of drugs used in immunotherapy for kidney cancer are monoclonal antibodies and cytokines.

  • Cryoablation

If there are contraindications to surgical intervention, an alternative method of treatment is used — cryoablation. The tumor is cooled and frozen with needles, penetrating through a small hole in the skin. The 5-year survival rate is 95%.

  • Arterial embolization

The vessels that feed the tumor are cut. Thus, the tumor disappears over time.

  • Radiofrequency ablation

Using high energy radio waves through a needle probe inserted into the tumor. The tumor is destroyed by heating.
