Craniostenosis treatment
Craniosynostosis is a congenital pathology characterized by premature fusion of the cranial sutures. This occurs before the child’s brain is fully formed, which makes normal skull growth impossible. Compensatory growth occurs and abnormal skull shapes develop.
Risks: According to a study by University College London, a baby’s risk of skull defects is 33% higher if the mother smokes during pregnancy. In some cases, craniostenosis is associated with the genetics of the child’s parents.
Diagnostics: physical examination and fundoscopy, MRI, CT.
If multiple sutures are involved, surgical correction with cranioplasty is necessary to make room for brain growth. To date, all children with this diagnosis are operated on.
