Astrocytoma treatment
Astrocytoma combines several types of tumors that arise in the brain from stellate cells (astrocytes) and is part of a group of tumors called gliomas.
The causes of astrocytoma are not exactly known.
The symptoms of this tumor can resemble completely different diseases and may occasionally have these non-specific manifestations:
- nausea and vomiting;
- behavioral and mental changes;
- trouble concentrating;
- memory impairment.
More specific symptoms will depend on the location of the tumor in the brain. For example, if the tumor is in the temporal lobe, there are problems with speech and coordination, and if it is in the occipital area, there are problems with vision and even hallucinations.
Astrocytoma can be diagnosed using specialized tests:
- magnetic resonance imaging;
- computer tomography;
- angiogram, which is an X-ray of the blood vessels;
- biopsy – an analysis that provides all the necessary information about the nature of the tumor.
There is no single standard for determining how successful astrocytoma treatment will be in a particular case. However, the following factors can be identified as influencing the success of treatment:
- the current size of the tumor;
- the rate of growth;
- localization;
- the age of the patient;
- the types of treatment that have already been used.
