Shalimov National Institute of Surgery and Transplantology

National Scientific Center for Surgery and Transplantology named after O. O. Shalimov of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine is a unique medical institution that is considered the flagship of Ukrainian surgery. The Shalimov Center uses the most innovative and effective methods of diagnosis, surgical treatment and rehabilitation, modern clinical protocols have been introduced, and advanced world experience is used.

Every year, the Center performs more than 7,000 operations of increased complexity using high-tech surgical methods.     Many complex operations were performed for the first time in Ukraine at the Shalimov Center:

    • 2001 – Liver transplantation from a living family donor;
    • 2001 – Heart transplantation;
    • 2004 – Bone transplantation;
    • 2004 – Simultaneous transplantation of pancreas and kidney from a living donor;
    • 2016 – Lung transplantation from two living family donors.

    The Shalimov Center actively cooperates with the best medical centers in the USA and Europe and implements the latest recommendations of medical associations. Employees are actively engaged in their own scientific developments, more than 650 of which are protected by patents and put into practice.

    Structure of the Shalimov National Institute of Surgery and Transplantology

    The structure of the Center includes the scientific department of the clinic, within which there are 14 departments and 5 laboratories, a clinic including 8 departments and 4 laboratories, and a consultative clinic.

    Department of Transplantation and Cardiac Surgery

    This department is one of the five largest cardiological centers in Ukraine, which perform open heart surgery and surgical interventions of varying degrees of complexity.

    Main areas of work of the department:

    • Operations for coronary heart disease. Various types of coronary artery bypass surgery, including bypass surgery on a beating heart, surgical interventions for left ventricular aneurysm and subsequent reconstruction using one’s own tissue or a synthetic patch.
    • Heart transplantation, left ventricular remodeling in late stages of heart failure.
    • Heart valve replacement and other types of surgical interventions for acquired heart defects.
    • Surgical treatment of heart tumors.
    • Operations in which valve replacement and arterial bypass are performed simultaneously.
    • Invasive cardiology. Diagnostic angiography, balloon angioplasty, coronary artery stenting, myocardial biopsy, vascular angiography, endovascular surgery for stenosis of the carotid and renal arteries, endovascular closure of the atrial membrane defect, aortic replacement.

    Department of Liver Transplantation and Surgery

    The main types of surgical interventions performed in the department:

    • Liver transplantation from a living family donor for cirrhosis, biliary atresia, Budd-Chiari disease, Wilson-Konovalov disease, Alagille syndrome.
    • Liver surgery to remove malignant tumors. Surgery of primary liver cancer, removal of metastases of various etiologies, surgery of cholangiocarcinomas (intrahepatic and bile ducts).
    • Removal of benign tumors such as liver adenomas, cysts, liver abscesses.
    • Duct shunting. Formation of selective and partial anastomoses.

    Kidney Transplantation Department

    The department’s specialists perform the following types of surgical interventions:

    • Kidney transplantation from a living family donor;
    • Cadaveric donor kidney transplantation;
    • Percutaneous puncture biopsy of a transplanted kidney;
    • Removal of kidney transplants that have not taken root;
    • Creation of vascular access for hemodialysis and treatment of complications;
    • Implantation of catheters for peritoneal dialysis;
    • Kidney autotransplantation with extracorporeal tumor resection;
    • Reconstructive surgeries on the ureters;

    Department of Thoracoabdominal Surgery

    The main activities of the department include:

    • Minimally invasive laparoscopic operations of the esophagus;
    • Colon laparoscopy;
    • Reconstructive operations of the gastrointestinal tract;
    • Surgical treatment of gastric and duodenal ulcers;
    • Surgeries for cancer of the esophagus, stomach and intestines;
    • Reconstructive surgeries for short small bowel syndrome;
    • Removal of fistulas of the gastrointestinal tract;
    • Surgery for morbid obesity;
    • Treatment of hormonally active tumors of the gastrointestinal tract;
    • Operations for complicated abdominal wall hernias;
    • Surgeries to remove tumors of the lungs and mediastinum;
    • Minimally invasive thoracoscopic surgery of lung tumors.

    Department of Pancreas and Bile Duct Surgery

    A wide range of surgical procedures are performed in this department, including:

    • Removal of pancreatic tumors;
    • Minimally invasive methods of surgical treatment of acute pancreatitis;
    • Operations for the treatment of chronic pancreatitis and its complications;
    • Removal of damage and cicatricial strictures of the biliary tract.

    What is used as a graft in reconstructive plastic surgery operations?

    At the Shalimov Center, plastic reconstructive surgeries of varying degrees of complexity are performed, which make it possible to close acquired defects of various locations and depths. Doctors use the most modern techniques and developments, replacing muscles, joints, and bones.

    For reconstruction, specialists use various autografts, which can be muscle, fascial, bone, or skin-fat. Flaps can be simple, combined (for example, musculocutaneous, musculocutaneous, osseous), or “prefabricated” (based on fascia, muscles, greater omentum).
