The structure of the Romodanov Neurosurgery Institute
Currently, more than 100 employees work at the Romodanov Institute. There are:
- 18 PhD candidates;
- 14 professors;
- 38 doctors of medical sciences.
The Institute occupies a leading position in the diagnosis and treatment of neurosurgical pathology in Ukraine. Over the years of its existence, scientific schools have been created and successfully operate here:
- neurotrauma;
- neurooncology;
- vascular pathology of the brain and spinal cord;
- minimally invasive spinal neurosurgery;

It was also very important for Ukraine to create a Scientific and Practical Center for Neurotrauma and a modern center for the rehabilitation of patients with injuries and diseases of the central nervous system on the institute base.
Currently, the clinical base of the Romodanov Institute consists of 15 specialized departments with 351 beds, in which more than 7,000 patients are treated every year. The polyclinic department of the Institute annually provides consultative assistance to 40,000 patients. More than 5,000 operations of the highest level of complexity are performed in 15 operating rooms. Due to the presence of specialized diagnostic and therapeutic departments, patients of the Institute can receive comprehensive medical care within one center.
Diagnostic departments of the Romodanov Neurosurgery Institute
Examination of patients is carried out in the departments:
- neuroradiology;

The recovery of patients takes place in the Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Treatment.
Achievements of the Romodanov Institute of Neurosurgery
The Institute employs 5 honored workers of science and technology of Ukraine, 10 honored doctors and 5 honored health workers. Leading experts give lectures in different countries of the world: the USA, Switzerland, Germany, Italy, Spain, Hungary, Moldova, etc. The scientists of the Romodanov Institute were awarded the following prestigious awards:
- Albert Schweitzer Grand Gold Medal;
- The election of the Vice-President of the World Federation of neurosurgical societies;
- Diploma of Honorary Professor of the Institute of Neurosurgery named after M. N. Burdenka;
- The Vesalius Award from the American Association of Neurological Surgeons.
As the main medical institution in the field of neurosurgery in the country, the Institute ensures the work of the Problem Commission “Neurosurgery” of the Ministry of Health and the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine. Over the years, it has been conducting a growing number of organizational and methodological activities aimed at developing neurosurgical services and improving specialized medical care for the population of Ukraine.
In recent years, despite the economic difficulties, the Institute was equipped with high-tech medical equipment, which made it possible to solve theoretical and practical problems of neurosurgery at a new qualitative level. Employees of clinical departments have successfully mastered and introduced into everyday practice operations using neuronavigation systems, endoscopic equipment, operating microscopes and angiographic devices of the latest generation.
The main activities of the Institute of Neurosurgery named after Romodanov
The employees of the Institute are engaged in:
- fundamental and scientific research on topical issues of medical science;
- the creation of scientific products based on the results of research: monographs, textbooks, reference books, manuals, as well as the development of methodological documentation for the implementation of research developments in clinical practice;
- provision of specialized high-tech medical care to the population of Ukraine on the basis of clinical and polyclinic departments of the Institute;
- conducting scientific expertise;
- training of highly qualified scientific personnel.
The Institute provides diagnostics and treatment of adult patients and children suffering from the following diseases:
- tumors of the brain and spinal cord, peripheral nerves;
- pathology of the vessels of the neck, brain and spinal cord (aneurysms, malformations, stroke);
- acute craniocerebral and spinal cord injuries, injuries of peripheral nerves and the consequences of these injuries;
- functional disorders of the nervous system (Parkinson’s syndrome, epilepsy);
- degenerative-dystrophic diseases of the spine, including herniated discs.
Relatively recently, a specialized center for the treatment of pain syndromes was also opened on the basis of the Institute.
Benefits of treatment at the Romodanov Neurosurgery Institute
As the main center of neurosurgery in Ukraine, the Romodanov Institute has a number of advantages.
Modern equipment
Diagnosis and treatment of patients with diseases and injuries of the central nervous system is carried out using:
- neuronavigation system “Stealth Station TREON Plus”;
- stereotaxic system “Integra Radionics”;
- linear accelerator “Trilogy”;
- operating microscopes “Opmi neuro”;
- angiosurgical complex with 3D reconstruction Axiom Artis;
- angiographic system Neirostar;
- MR-tomographs “Magnetom Concerto”, “Magnetom Vision plus”, “Intera”;
- Computer tomographs “Somatom CR”, “Brilliance CT 64 slice” (multispiral).
High-tech equipment allows the doctors of the institute to carry out diagnostic and therapeutic measures with very high accuracy.
Innovative treatments
When developing therapeutic protocols, the doctors of the Romodanov Institute use the results of research in the field of:
- biotechnology;
- nanotechnology;
- bionics;
- genetics;
- micromechanics;
- quantum electronics.
The main trends in the treatment of patients with CNS diseases are aimed at a clear preoperative assessment of the boundaries of the pathological focus. In combination with the use of minimally invasive techniques and modern equipment, this allows doctors to influence the affected area as accurately as possible without affecting healthy tissues.
The employees of the Romodanov Institute pay great attention not only to neurosurgical methods of treatment, but also to the conservative treatment of inoperable neoplasms. The use of modern methods for assessing the molecular profile of the tumor allows them to select the most effective chemotherapeutic agents.
Another innovative method that has significantly increased the duration and quality of life of patients with aggressive forms of brain cancer is dendritic cell vaccination. Practice and clinical studies have shown that anti-cancer vaccines developed in Ukraine are not inferior in quality to foreign analogues. Currently, the Institute continues active work in this direction.
A wide range of highly specialized therapeutic procedures
Over the years of work at the Romodanov Institute of Neurosurgery, such treatment methods have been introduced and are actively used:
- minimally invasive operations on the spine (puncture laser microdiscectomy, puncture vertebroplasty, transcutaneous transpedicular fixation of the spine);
- microsurgery and endovascular surgery of arterial aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations of the brain, stenotic injuries of the main cerebral arteries;
- removal of brain tumors using neuronavigation and telemonitoring systems;
- stereotactic radiosurgery of tumors located deep or near functionally important areas of the brain.
This is not a complete list of modern methods of treating diseases and injuries of the central nervous system at the Institute.
