Surgical treatment of herniated intervertebral discs of the cervical spine

The vast majority of operations are simple decompressions that are performed endoscopically, microsurgically, or by standard open techniques.
The endoscopic technique is very gentle, but has its limitations and can be used in 10-15% of patients who are indicated for surgical treatment. It is carried out without direct visual control. The surgeon can observe his actions on the screen of the endoscopic unit.
During microsurgery, a 3 cm long incision is made in the skin, an operating field is created using a tube or a microexpander, and the surgeon, looking through an operating microscope, removes compression of the nerve root.
The open technique is indicated for large bilateral stenosis of the spinal canal, when in some cases, after decompression of the nerve structures, dynamic or fixed stabilization with spinal fusion is appropriate.
