About doctor Guido Gerken

Prof. Dr. Guido Gerken: Director of the Clinic for Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the UK Essen for 20 years. One of his particular merits is the establishment of the liver focus at the University Hospital Essen: Here, above all, the treatment of his patients according to the latest scientific findings and the development of transplant medicine. But also in research he always excelled positively.

He was the responsible director of over 150 clinical studies in his clinic alone. He sees his passion as a doctor in helping other people and at the same time advancing science. “It is important to respect the patient’s personality. To take the peace and quiet, to deal with the whole person ”, emphasizes Prof. Dr. Guido Gerken.

Establishment of a supraregional liver competence center

From 1988 to 89 Guido Gerken completed his research fellowship in the “Molecular Biology and Hepatocarcinesis” department at the Pasteur Institute in Paris, one of the world’s leading basic research centers for biology and medicine.

In 1990 he was appointed senior physician, the years 1990 to 1995 as senior physician rounded off his successful years in Mainz.

In 1998 he followed the call to the professorship for internal medicine in Essen and since then has been director of the clinic for gastroenterology and hepatology at the Essen University Hospital. At the time of his appointment, the clinic specialized in research into inflammatory bowel disease. Prof. Gerken continuously aligned it to research into the liver and its disease and thus expanded it into a supraregional competence center for acute and chronic liver diseases.

His main research interests are in line with this: acute and terminal viral hepatitis, especially hepatitis B. Prof. Gerken headed various DFG projects, also in collaborative research centers and clinical research groups, in particular as spokesman for DFG-KFO 117 (living liver donation). In addition to internal medicine, gastroenterology and hepatology, his main treatment areas:

• Endoscopy;
• Liver transplantation;
• Autoimmunity;
• Inflammatory bowel disease.
