- 2003 – Professor of the Department of Transplantology and Endocrine Surgery, Course of Cardiovascular Surgery, Zaporizhzhia Medical Academy of Post-Graduate Education;
- 2004-2007 and 2011-2018 – Chief transplantologist of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, since 2019 – Chief expert on transplantation issues of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine.
Doctor’s specialty
The main areas of scientific work of Academician Oleksandr Nykonenko include:
- solving organizational issues of transplantology;
- surgical treatment of ischemic heart disease using unique myocardial revascularization techniques;
- cell transplantation;
- kidney transplant.
He is also actively involved in issues of surgical intervention in chronic cerebrovascular accidents, treatment of peptic ulcers, chronic cholestatic hepatitis and diseases of the endocrine organs. An outstanding practitioner and expert, he became the first in Ukraine to successfully perform a heart transplant, and in 2011, he simultaneously performed three complex procedures: a liver transplant, a kidney transplant, and a pancreas transplant for the treatment of diabetes.
