About doctor Mykhailo Kostiuk

Mykhailo Kostiuk is a senior worker of the Department of Vascular Neurosurgery of the Institute of Neurosurgery named after Academician Romodanov of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, neurosurgeon of the highest category, Candidate of Medical Sciences. The main activities of the doctor are neurosurgery and vascular surgery.

After graduating from the Bogomolets National Medical University, Mykhailo Kostiuk paid great attention to improving his professional experience. He completed a five-year training cycle from the European Association of Neurosurgical Societies (EANS) in the best neurosurgical clinics in Germany, Turkey, Belgium, Greece, Spain, and Denmark. In subsequent years, he continued to train in the leading centers of neurosurgery in Europe.

Mykhailo Kostiuk personally has performed more than 4,000 selective cerebral angiographies (studies of cerebral vessels). He was the first in Ukraine to perform endovascular angioplasty and stenting on cerebral arteries. He has the largest experience in the country in the field of practical implementation of endovascular interventions for stenotic lesions of the main arteries of the brain.

In 2004, Dr. Kostiuk for the first time at the Romodanov Neurosurgery Institute performed an endovascular intervention to embolize a cerebral artery aneurysm using coils. He is fluent in the technique of microsurgery when performing operations on the vessels of the brain (using an operating microscope).

Doctor’s specialty

The main areas of practical activity of Mykhailo Kostiuk are:

  • surgical and endovascular operations in the pathology of cerebral vessels (stenotic lesions of the cerebral arteries, arterial aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, cerebral cavernomas, hematomas after a stroke);
  • treatment of brain tumors;
  • surgical treatment of traumatic intracranial hemorrhages;
  • operations for liquorodynamic disorders (hydrocephalus);
  • diagnostic studies of cerebral vessels.

The main scientific issues that Dr. Kostiuk is interested in include:

  • vascular lesions of the brain;
  • features of surgical treatment of stenotic lesions of the main cerebral arteries in patients with arterial hypertension;
  • endovascular embolization of cerebral aneurysms with coils;
  • safety and effectiveness of microsurgical and endovascular techniques in restoring the patency of cerebral arteries after stenotic lesions;
  • methods of surgical prevention of ischemic stroke;
  • safety and efficacy of microsurgical and endovascular techniques for the treatment of cerebral aneurysms;
  • development of unified clinical protocols for emergency medical care and rehabilitation of patients with hemorrhagic and ischemic stroke.

Mykhailo Kostiuk performs the following diagnostic and therapeutic procedures:

  • liquor shunting operations;
  • embolization of cerebral aneurysms;
  • surgical treatment of arteriovenous malformations of the brain;
  • stenting of extra- and intracranial segments of cerebral arteries;
  • diagnostic selective cerebral angiography;
  • microsurgical operation of clipping of cerebral aneurysm;
  • microsurgical resection of arteriovenous malformations and cavernomas of the brain;
  • removal of intracranial hematomas;
  • endarterectomy;
  • elimination of extravascular compression.
